South Sudan's Food Shortage

  • Gained Independence

South Sudan gained their independence from Sudan, but now that they're divided, they're in midst of a war.
  • Civilians Fleeing

Due to the violence that arose, over 413,000 civilians relocated within the first month of the conflict to parts of the United Nations.
  • Famine Was Declared

Early in the year, parts of South Sudan declared they were in a famine, resulting in over 100,000 people on the verge of starvation.
  • Start of the Food Shortage

In the start of the year, there was a 40% increase in the amount of people struggling from a severe food insecurity, compared to last years numbers.
  • South Sudan's Economy

During this time, the cost of goods and services went through the roof. Their inflation rate rose to 835%, the largest in the world at that point.
  • Famine Called Off

Even though the famine was called off, there are still an estimated 7 million people who are in need of humanitarian assistance.
  • Civilians Still Fleeing

Since the crisis, over 4 million people had to flee their homes, over 2.4 million fled to neighboring countries, and more than 1.7 million were trapped in the country. This now makes South Sudan the third-most fled country, right next to Afghanistan and Syria.
