    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was passed to balance the power between the free and slave states, making Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state.
  • Mexican American War

    Mexican American War
    The Mexican American War was the first U.S. armed conflict fought on foreign land. It started on April 25, 1846 and ended February 2, 1848. U.S. President James K. Polk believed the United States was destined to spread across the continent, this lead to the war. The two countries started fighting along the Rio Grande, with the majority of the victories going to the U.S.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe HIdalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe HIdalgo
    This treaty marked the agreement between the U.S. and Mexico. It entitled the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits, and Settlement between the two countries. This could have helped slavery spread because it allowed people to move into the areas around the border, where they could own large pieces of land. Meaning they needed more slaves to work the new land.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitive Slave Act was apart of the Compromise of 1850 between the Southern Slave states and the Northern Free states. This law allowed southern slaveholders to capture slaves that had escaped from the north. This helped slavery expand because if a free man was caught in the south, he would be turned into a slave.
