  • Maria Hertogh riots

    Maria Hertogh riots
    Riot over the custody of Maria Hertogh between her biological parents and Muslim adoptive parents. The riot further increased the tensions between the locals and the eurasians when the muslims rioted and attacked any europeans in sight, thus beginning the anti colonial feelings in the locals
  • Anti National-Service Riots

    British government required that all males aged 18-20 to go for part time national service. A meeting between affected students and Chief Secretary William Goode resulted in a clash between students and the police. This along with the fact that the Chinese schools' funding were cut to make away for English-medium education, further gathered support for anti colonial sentiments
  • David Marshall elected as first chief minister

    David Marshall elected as first chief minister
    David Marshall brought the labour front to to a narrow victory in Singapore's first Legislative Assembly elections. This kickstarted Singapore's road to independence as David Marshall was the first to go to London and lead a delegation to London to negotiate for complete self-rule. Although he was rejected, he brought forward the sense of independence, and the mistakes he made allowed Singapore to learn from them, and ultimately gain independence.
  • Hock Lee Bus Riots

    Hock Lee Bus Riots
    The Hock Lee bus riots occurred because of failed negotiations between the Hock Lee Amalgamated Bus Company and its bus workers. The workers wanted better working conditions while the employers wanted to protect their business interests, and this eventually evolved into what we know now as the Hock Lee Bus Riots. The Riots may have been a result of the anxieties workers and students felt because of colonial society, and this led to a sense of nationalism & ultimately Singaporean independence.
  • Lim Yew Hock succeeded in gaining full independence for Singapore

    Lim Yew Hock, who succeeded David Marshall, managed to acquire Singapore full self-rule from the British, mostly through his good & efficient law enforcement.
