  • Trust v Mistrust

    Trust v Mistrust
Shirly (age 2) wants to explore and move around. Shirly's mom, Laura shuts down the idea and keeps her in one spot of the house all day. When Shirly cries, she gets yelled at and put in a room by herself. In Erikson's first stage, Trust v Mistrust, the crisis is having trust in all adults or believing everyone is evil (mistrust). The crisis can also lead to carrying the act of mistrust for the rest of their lives.
  • Identity v Role Confusion

    Identity v Role Confusion
Shirly (age 18) has decided to move out due to her relationship with her mom Laura. Shirly has hopes that she can finally be her own person without Laura over her shoulder correcting her every move. Erikson's fifth stage, identity v role confusion, teens/young adults learn to find themselves and their purpose (Identity). In crisis, if they don't experiment in this stage, they can feel out of place from their peers (Role Confusion).
  • Intimacy v Isolation

    Intimacy v Isolation
Shirly (age 27) found a man that she has learned to love and trust. Even though she had a rough childhood and never thought she would ever be able to find trust in anyone, she finally did. Erikson's stage 6, intimacy vs isolation, is the crisis between finding someone to spend the rest of your life with someone or decide that nobody is worth trusting (isolation).
