Embargo Act of 1807 was blockade of foreign trade. This contributed to sectionalism because it separated the U.S. from foreign countries and kept businessmen and well off merchants financially stable but made it hard for small farmers to support themselves financially. -

Increase taxes on imported manufactured goods. This contributed to sectionalism because it further divided North & South economically because the domestic tariffs hurt the South more than they hurt the North. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was a set of laws passed having to deal with the issue of slavery. California entered the union as a free state and boundaries between Texas and New Mexico were established. This contributed to sectionalism because this further divides the country into slave states and free states. -

Kansas Nebraska Act
Allowed for the people of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. This contributes to sectionalism states are still still being separated by slave states and free states. -

Bleeding Kansas
Bleeding Kansas was a 6 year spree of violence and murder after the Kansas Nebraska Act overturned the Missouri Compromise and pro slavery settlers moved to Kansas to influence the decision of whether or not Kansas should be a slave state. -
Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave who tried to sue for his freedom after his original owner died in a free state. The courts ruled that because he was a slave he was not citizen and therefore he could not be free. This contributed to sectionalism because this case shows the unfair treatment towards African Americans. -

Extreme Abolitionist John Brown and his 21 followers had plans to raid a federal arsenal in order to arm themselves and cause a slave rebellion. This contributed to sectionalism because you have the people who are outraged that society is treating people like they are less than nothing and then people who turn a blind eye or don't see anything wrong with slavery. -
Election of 1860
The Election of 1860 is when Abraham Lincoln was elected as President. This contributed to sectionalism because it further divided the nation, Lincoln was a progressive Republican who ran on the platform of anti-slavery and pro industry, while a good chunk of the U.S. relied heavily on slavery. -
SC Secedes from Union
South Carolina left the union. South Carolina succession contributed to sectionalism in the form of a state separating from the union because they felt like the laws that Lincoln was implementing were not in their favor.
