Russian Revolution begins
Russia is in a state of unrest from WWI and many people are unhappy. -
Bread Riots
Marchers went through St. Petersburg, calling for bread. Soldiers refused to fire on the activists. Through advice of advisors, Nicholas II abdictated, or gave up his position as czar. -
Lenin in Exile
Seeing Russia in turmoil, Germany sees a way to weaken them, and help send Lenin home to increase Revolution. -
Lenin arrives in Petrograd
As Lenin arrives on train to St. Petersburg (Petrograd), he addresses crowd about the coming revolution. -
Bolshevik Takeover
Red Guards joined mutinous Russian Sailors, and in a few days Lenin's Revolutionaries took over the collapsed government. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
Treaty signed with Germany, giving up large chunks of population and territory to Germany. In agreement for no more war. -
Lenin Creates NEP
Lenin adopted the New Economic Policy, or NEP. It allowed some capitalist ventures. Although the state kept control of banks, foreign trade, and large industries, small businesses were allowed to reopen for private profit. -
Communist Constitution
Communists produced a constitution that seemed both democratic and socialist. It set up an elected legislature, later called the Supreme Soviet, and gave all citizens over 18 the right to vote. All political power, resources, and means of production would "belong" to workers and peasants. The new government united the old Russian empire in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), or Soviet Union. -

Aimed at building heavy industry, improving transportation, and increasing farm output. Stalin is trying to increase Russian heavy industry. -

Women were allowed access to education and jobs, including medicine, engineering, and science -
Great Purge
Stalin's reign of terror, old Bolsheviks, and early party activists as well as, army heroes, industrial managers, writers, and ordinary citizens. They were charged with a wide range of crimes, including war crimes and failing to reach production rates. -
Russian Heavy Industry
Large factories, hydroelectric power stations, and huge industrial complexes rose across the Soviet Union. Oil, coal, and steel production grew. Mining expanded, and new railroads were built. -
