Road to Andrew Johnson's impeachment

  • Radical Republicans refuse to seat senators from rebel states

    once Johnson came into office he made it easy for rebel states to rejoin the union, declaring that any percentage of allegiance was necessary instead of 50 or even 10. Due to this easy reincorporation previous confederates were able to take office and even be elected into congress. Once congress reconvened, Radical Republicans were outraged and refused to seat the former confederates.
