  • 1st Political Party

    Federalist: Hamilton, strong central gov, upper class, loose interp.
    Dem.Rep: Jefferson, weak central gov, farmers, strict interp.
  • Revolution of 1800

    Election of Jefferson (Dem) first transfer of political parties (peaceful)
  • Hartford Convention

    End of Federalist Party. Feds. suggested succeeding
  • Era of Good Feelings

    After war of 1812, only one political party (Dem-Reps). Ended with the Panic of 1819 (overspeculation in credit)
  • 2nd Political Party

    Democrats(Jackson, similar to Dem.Reps.), Whig(Clay, similar to Federalists)
  • Rise of Whigs

    Grew bc of Jacksonian Democracy
  • Free Soil Party

    Lincoln was a Rep. on a Free Soil platform. Wanted slavery to not expand into North, bc they didn't want slaves to take away white jobs. Eventually became part of Republican Party
  • Rise of Republican Party

    Groups opposed KS-NB Act (Whigs, Northern Democrats, Free Soilers, etc). Opposed slavery (Free Soil Platform). LINCOLN
  • Populist Party

    William Jennings Bryan. Farmer's rights. Coinage of silver ("Cross of Gold"), Direct Election of Senators (16th Amend)
  • Progressive Party

    TR, Taft, Wilson. Lots of reform and welfare
  • Switch of Political Base (new deal)

    African-Americans and other minorities used to vote Republican (Lincoln in CW), but bc of New Deal, they began to vote Democratic
  • Neorepublicanism

    Very conservative (Moral Majority, Jerry Falwell), REAGAN. small government, big businesses/free market
