Maryland tried to charge taxes on all notes NOT from Maryland but then the Federal Government told them that they couldn't do that and took that power away -

The Supreme Court held the power to regulate interstate commerce -

The government took away the states power to choose if slavery was legal in their state or not. -

States are granted land to build universities -
14th Amendment
If you're born in the US you are considered a US Citizen. This affected everyone in the US not state by state -
Sherman Anti-Trust Act
prohibits certain business activities that Federal Government regulators deem to be anti-competitive and requires the federal government to investigate and persue trusts -
Pure Food & Drug Act
The Federal Government was able to regulate and choose what foods or drugs were dangerous, addictive and illigal -

States can charge income tax set by themselves -
Gitlow v. New York
A decision by the supreme court which ruled that the 14th amendment had extended the reach of certain limitations on Federal Government authority set by the 1st amendment -
New Deal
More laws that all had to follow and states had no say in were passed -
Civil Rights Act
A law passed, outlawing discrimination based off of race, religion, sex, or national origin. All states must follow this law -
Economic Opportunity Act
Authorized formation of local community action agencies as part of the war on poverty. These Agencies were then regulated by the Federal Government. -

Passed by congress, making it illegal to discriminate someone based on disibility. This is a law everyone must follow, thus, giving the Federal Government more power. -
104th Congress
During Clinton's 3rd and 4th year of his presidency. Many laws and acts were passed which increased the Federal Govrnment's power. -

The first Supreme Court case since the New Deal to set limits to Congress power under the Commerce Clause of the US Constitutuion -

Established the Unconstitutuionality of certain interim provisions of the Brady Handgun Violence Act -
9/11
9/11 gave the Federal Gevernment more power because they bagan passing a large amount of nationwide laws. -
No Child Left Behind Act
requires states to develop assesments in basic skills. This givs the states the power to decide what scores students need on tests or even what tests to take -
Development of Homeland Security
The Federal Government gained more protection and power by creating Homeland Security after 9/11
