    Republican George W. Bush beat Democratic challenger Al Gore in one of the closest elections in American history. Even though Al Gore received more of the popular vote. Bush received more of the electoral votes, therefore winning the election.

The incident strains diplomatic ties between the two nations as the United States demands that China return both the plane and its crew to American authorities

And it focused on ensuring that states and schools boost the performance of certain groups of students, such as English-language learners, students in special education, and poor/minority children, whose achievement, on average, trails their peers.

President Bush declared the end of major combat operations on May 1, 2003.

This operation was named after the 1984 film Red Dawn.

Just under a month after Hurricane Katrina devastated the U.S. Gulf coast.

Roberts became the youngest member of the Court, and the third-youngest person to have ever become Chief Justice

    Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for the killing of 148 Shiites from Dujail, in retaliation for the assassination attempt of 8 July 1982. On December 30, 2006 at approximately 6:05 am Baghdad time, Saddam Hussein's sentence was carried out and he was executed by hanging.

    Former President Gerald R. Ford, who led the United States out of the Watergate era but who lost his own bid for election after pardoning President Richard M. Nixon, died the 26th of December 2006 at his home in California. He was 93, making him the oldest former president, passing Ronald Reagan, who died in 2004, by just over a month.
