Peter the Great

  • Date of Birth

    Peter the Great was born on June 9th, 1672 in Moscow, Russia. (Biography.com Editors). Moscow was a vast piece of land that was troubled and weak. (Grey 15). Peter the Great was one of many children of Czar Alexis. (Biography.com Editors). He was educated with private tutors until age 7, the death of Czar Feodor who died without a heir. The majority favored Peter because he was educated and smart. This is significant because this man improves Russia by making reforms. Source: (Harcave 384).
  • Exploring the Mississippi

    Louis Jolliet and Jesult Jacques Marquette explored the Mississippi River in 1673. They turned back in fear of the Spanish but noticed the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. They confirmed the rivers did not lead to the Pacific, they lead to the Gulf of Mexico. Their expedition was difficult, the route was poorly coordinated and the Appalachian Mountains blocked their ways. This event was important, we learn from them that these rivers lead to the Gulf of Mexico. Source: (Timelines of History 225).
  • Takeover of China

    Qing admitted stronger generals in 1674 by making them "regional governors." They believed if they enriched themselves, it would lead to less revolt. The only risk was that their own stronger revenues. Three feudatories revolted across the southern portion of China where it was controlled and handled by rivals Wu Sangul, Shangkexi Gungdong, and Geng Jingzhong.   • The English Pass Habeas Corpus

    The English Parliament passed Habeas Corpus Act in 1679. This was a legal assertion that no one was unlawfully detained. It gave people to right to go before a judge, and the right to trial. The reason was to prevent James (Duke of York) from suing protestant members without legal justification. The people feared of a Catholic Dynasty resulting in Mary over throwing James.   • Peter Becomes Czar

    Peter obtains Czar of Russia at a young age in 1682. As a result, little was required of him. He took part in formal ceremonies and enjoyed military practice (arms practice, battle maneuvers, and recruiting and training). His affection advanced him to navigation, carpentry, stone cutting, and printing. His mother purposely attempted to interfere his development by bringing a women into his life.   • Peter Marries Eudoxia Lopukin

    Peter's mother altered his development by arranging his marriage with Eudoxia Lopukin in January of 1689.He didn't let her stand in his way. Peter ignored Eudoxia even after she gave birth to their first child in 1960. Peter the Great then sent his sister Sophia away to convent. Later for the first time, he fought truthfully against the Turkish forces at Azov in 1695, and remained to neglect his wife and new child. This is important because Peter fights against Turkey.   • Paper Money

    On February 3rd, 1690, the first batch of paper money was used in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They were first printed to cover military expenses from King William's War. Other colonies followed through and started using printed paper money This is significant because this is the type of money we use today. It was made a long time ago and is still used now.   • Making Changes

    Peter observes some serious problems as a czar. He begins his ideal plan for a successful army in 1695 by sending men west to European Countries to study shipbuilding and navigation. He believes that learning this material will make him and his army a more capable group for future wars. This is significant because his plans makes his army a stronger and more successful army in the long run. Source: (Harcave 386).
  • Hiring for Russia

    Peter makes the decision to hire shipwrights or shipbuilders for Russia in the year 1697. He departs and flies west to Holland,Germany, England, and Austria to observe their cultures. There he learns technological and superior life styles that he puts under consideration. This is significant because these reforms he learns in different countries are what makes him known today.   • Peter Returns

    Peter returns in the year 1698, he wants to undergo changes to Russia. He shaves beards, abandons the old Russian calendar and replaces it with the Julian Calendar updates the alphabet, and creates a newspaper. (Biography.com Editors). He dealt with the revolt of Moscow troops and his annoying wife Eudoxia. Peter forces Eudoxia into convent. This is significant because this is where the the westernization occurs in which he is known for. (newspaper, alphabet, education.) Source: (Harcave 386).
  • Declares War

    In the year 1700, Peter declares war on Sweden. the reason being, for Sweden to cede territory so Russia could use it as an outlet to the Baltic Sea. That led to the first encounter with Sweden at Narvain in November but was defeated. From then on, he trained his army to be better organized and equipped. They went back to war with Sweden and won. The sight became known as St. Petersburg, the capitol. This is mportant because the capitol St. Peterburg is established. Source: (Harcave 386).
  • Death of Auragangzeb

    The death of Auragangzeb, the 6th emperor of India, summoned by Sikh Guru Gobind Singh but passed in the year 1707. Gobind became friends with the new emperor Bahadur Shah but was killed by orders of Nawab Wazir Khan. He had ruled for 48 years (1658-1707) but a majority of it was spent fighting Marathas. This event was important to history because it was the death of many people. Especially the death of the 6th emperor of India who was summoned. Source: (Timelines of History 236).
  • Falls in love with Catherine

    Peter frees himself from Eudoxia because he didn't want to be with her. He then fell in love with Catherine Skavrenska secretly. The married in private until 1712 they openly announced to the public. Together they had their first son, Peter Petrovich. He was christened and was next on the throne for Czar of Russia. His first son became lazy and hostile, resulting in time in prison. This is significant because Peter leaves Eudoxia and falls in love with who he wants. Source: (Harcave 386).
  • Quakers and Smallpox

    Pennsylvania went under pressure from Quaker population in 1712. They set free slaves to attempt to abolish slavery, Queen Anne reversed the decision. The state founder and leader, William Penn didn't oppose slavery. In Africa's region, sailors infected many causing the population to decrease. Over 90% of the population died of the disease. This is important to history because Pennsylvania lost a lot of their population due to smallpox because no one was immune to it. (Timelines of History 240).
  • His Last Works

    Peter last major works are done in his last decade around 1720. He overall he made Russia a powerful and prosperous place. For example, he redid institutions, created new and improved policies from what he learned on his trips, and encouraged industry and commerce. Source: (Biography.com Editors). This is significant because he instituted schools and newspapers but his proudest and greatest accomplishment in his life was the development of St. Petersburg. Source: (Harcave 387).
  • Peter the Great Dies

    A treaty ends the war with Persia and it was ratified in 1724. Then his health decreased. Peter died on January 28th 1725 in the city he created himself. (Harcave 387). This is significant because the man who made Russia a prosperous and more successful place has died. He has gained land in Estonia, Lativa, and Finland (Biography.com Editors), and fought the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and Sweden. (Nothinger 1).
