    Paul Farmer met the Haitians and heard them speak Creole for the very first time when the "Warden" signed his family up for picking citrus. When the "Warden" realized the pay was too low to support the family with, he called the work off.

His father, who denied the fact that he was proud of Paul when he was alive, left a letter for Paul telling him Paul had no idea how proud his father was of him after he died.
