    The Abolishionist movement was a the anti slavery movement. Their efforts to end slavery were very succesful but led our country to the civil war. There were religious abolishionists, radical and militant abolistionists, and political abolitionists.The movement caused the division of our countries in all these areas, which eventually resulted in the civil war.

  • John Brown and bleeding Kansas

    John Brown and bleeding Kansas
    Kansas broke the Missouri Comprimise by letting the people decide whether it would be a slave state or not. Both Abolishionists and pro slavery fighters fled into the territory trying to sway the vote. John Brown helped lead the abolishionist movement and played a huge role in ultimately making it a free state. This only created more violence and conflict between the North and South.

    Missouri Compromise
    Missori was declared a slave state, however main was brought into the union as a free state to balance out the senate. All states North of Missouri were to be free states and all those that were South were to be slave states. This completely divided the union in half(North and South).

    When the war ended it left the Union with many territories. These states had to be declared slave states or Free states. This caused for a divide among views and even led to some violence.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    This act was passed by congress because the South was upset about their slaves running away. It declared that runnaway slaves that were captured, were to be returned to their masters. This scared the north because it was giving more power to the pro slavery movement.

    It was an anti slavery novel Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a very popular novel that caused a lot of conflict on the topic of slavery. This only aided the separation of our country.
  • Dred Scott Descision

    Dred Scott Descision
    Dred Scott Decision(1857)- Dred scott was an enslaved man from the south. His owner Dr. John Emerson brought him north to Illinois and then Wisconsin where slavery was prohibited. Scott then sued for his freedom in a court in Missouri. The court ruled that no African American, whether they were free or enslaved, could be an American citizen. This was a shocking ruling that split the country due to views on slavery.

    During this election, there were four candidates in the field. Linclon won, but due to the amount of candidates he only had 40% of the popular vote. This meant that the majority of voters werent happy. On top of this Linclon wanted to abolish slavery so the election greatly upset the south. This only causede for more of a divivde.

    Many southern states such as Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, among others were so unhappy with the election of 1860 that they decided to separate from the union. Thiss literakky divided the states forming the confederacy.
