    Birth of Papa Doc
    Francois was born on April 14, 1907. He was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, his family lived in a middle class suburban area. Francois’s grandfather a tailor, and Francois’s father was a school teacher and a court judge.

    Papa Doc graduated and got married in the time period of 1934-1939. He graduated from Haitian National University Medical School in 1934. In 1939 he married Simone Ovide, a nurse, and they had three daughters and a son.

    Duvalier had a base that was supported in the countries, and his campaign was almost the same to the other candidates and that they all promised to rebuild the country and give the country a new start. Francois however, made different deals with a few, of the other candidates. Duvalier's government was stressed with many problems. The old candidates refused to help with hiding, encouraging violence and disobedience against the new Duvalier.

    During the time that Duvalier created an organization responsible to him, the Tontons Macoutes (also known as "Bogeymen"), the version of a secret police in Haiti. In the late 1950s to the mid 1960s this organization continued to grow. Plus was responsible for assassinating anyone that thought badly, and differently towards Francois. In the 1961 elections altered to have Francois’s name placed at the top. After, he gave a speech and said that this gave him another six years in office.

    After the elections in 1961 the American government told everyone that the United States the truth of Duvalier’s results to legally be Haiti’s president should end in specifically in 1963. But that was the AID’s (American Agency for International Development’s) mission in 1962.

    On May 15, to show that AIDs didn’t agree with Duvalier's continued presence, the United States suspended diplomatic relations with Haiti, At the same time, relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic were getting worse, and Duvalier's main enemy, threatened to invade Haiti.

    The Organization of the American States (OAS) became involved, sending facts mission in Haiti. But, Duvalier was still firmly in control, the Dominicans backed down, and Haiti went back to their business.
  • President FOREVER

    President FOREVER
    After the election of 1961 Francois is still Haiti’s ruler. In 1963, many people that observed things felt it was only a matter of time before Duvalier would have to be moved to the place of a permanent presidency. On April 1, 1964, it was confirmed that Francois was now the president of Haiti for life. A "vote" on the new constitution was held, and on June 22, 1964, and then Duvalier was officially named president for life.

    After the Haitian political life was a little calmer. Francois had taken over his country and holding off the United States, the OAS, and the Dominican Republic in the process, Duvalier was in complete control. During the 1960s he survived many damaging hurricanes and numerous attempts to overthrow him. A small, gray-haired man, Duvalier began suffering from heart disease and other health problems.

    The Death of Francois Duvalier
    In January 1971 he directed the National Assembly to change the constitution to allow his son, Jean Claude Duvalier, to succeed him. Duvalier died on April 21, 1971, and his son immediately took over.
