    A little before 8 a.m. on December 7, 1941, Japanese fighter planes attacked an American naval base at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii. The attack lasted two hours, destroying nearly 20 American naval vessels, 8 large battleships, and about 200 airplanes, leaving 2,000 American soldiers dead, and 1,000 wounded. The next day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan, which was approved. Three days later Japan allies with Germany and Italy, and declare war with the US

    The island pof the Philippines was amajor target for the Japanese. General Douglass MacAruther led the defence of the islands.MAcAruthers troops were no mathc for the Japanese troops. Troops soon relaized foodd,supplies were very low.once the Americans were pretty much done Japanese solider made them march thorugh the forest of Bataan while sick, starving and dying. Those who couldnt keep up or fell out of line were shot and killed, this was called the Bataan Death March.

    Army Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle led a group of 16 American bombers on a daring air raid of Tokyo and other Japanese cities.This event didn't do any major damage to the Japanese targets did have some effects on the Japanese peoples.This then gave the American People a reason to celebrate.

    The battle took place as Japanese forces were preparing to invade the British controlled Port Moresby on the island of New Quinea. To prevent the attack, U.S. Admiral Chester Nimitz sent two aircraft carriers on the attack. Following the battle, American and Japanese navies both suffered damage. For Americans, this included the loss of an aircraft carrier and several dozen aircraft, but they still stopped the Japanese attack. For the first time, the Japanese advance had been halted.

    The Japanses Military tired to lure the Americans into a major sea battle.The plan of attack was to attck the Americans at the island of midway in the middle of the Pacfic Ocean.
    The Japanese hoped that the attack would pull the American fleet into the area, and then destroy it. However the Americans had naval intelligence officers break a Japanese code, and they learned about the plan of attack, June 3, 1942, and knew the direction of which they would approach.

    This battle was the first major offensive and decisive victory for the Allies in the Pacific theater. This is where the U.S. MArines made a surprise attack on the Japanese that were stationed in Solomon Islands. They took control of an air base that was undergoing construction. Both the Japanese and AMericans suffered heavy loses but the Japenese had way more deaths which cause them to with draw from Guadalcanal.

The fighting in the Pacfic got very costly the both lost dozens of ships and thousands of aircrafts. the Japanese were unable to replace there loses in the battle.The used code talker which was translating message into coded messages where the Japanese could 't figure it out.

    First major action battle held on the seas, with nearly 300 ships took place in this battle. Allies held a hiuge advantage in the number of ships. Fisrt war to see the use of the new Japanese weapon- the kamikaze attack. "devine wind" In this cade the kamikaze was apiont who loaded his ships with bombs and crashed into enemy ships intentionally. Japanese lost 4 carriers, 3 ships and the rest were other vessles and lost pretty much there entire fleet and had no reson to continue war.

    The new massive Maerican B-29 bomber began making raids on Japanese cities. AMericans set out to capture Iwo Jima, and they greatly outnumber those of the defenders. Japanese for the first ime fighting on their own land were hiding in caves and tunnels and were protected by concrete bonkers.Some Americans thought that by capturing Iwo Jima it would force the Japanese to surrender but they refused too.WAr lasted several more weeks and when it was all done 7,ooo U.S. dead and 20,000 Japanese dead.
  • Battle of Okinawa

    This battle was 350 miles from Japan, this was also the bloodiest task the Americans had to face in the Pacfic. When Okinawa was invade Japanese retreated to the southern tip of the island, five days later they attacked.Over 12,000 AMericans died by Japanese hiding in tunnels and caves. The Japanese had a total of 110,000 troops fighing this war.

    9 days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima this city was bombed with an atomic bomb as well. WIth a total of 40,000 deaths. This event didn't stop the war. Hirohito wanted to surrender but the military DIsagreed.
  • V-J Day

    When they tried to overthorw the Japanese goverment and failed, the war continued. On this date it was decladed V-J Day.Hirohito announcced the end of the war over the radio.
  • Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima

    An American B-29 called the Enola Gay flew over the city and dropped an atomic bomb, and within secons it exploded.SOme 80,000 residents died right away and over 35,000 were injured. just about 2/3 of the citys buildings were destroyed out of the 90,000.
