    This tariff was designed to protect the American industry and to encourage American manufacturing. Henry Clay pushed for this tariff because he wanted the government to gain a source of revenue and he hoped that the tariff would also gain him some support.

    This was the “Tariff of abominations”. This tariff had European manufacturers sell their products very cheaply to encourage the productivity of the American industry. This tariff was good for the North but bad for the South because they depended on European trade which was slowed down.

    The job of the note written by John C. Calhoun called the South Carolina Exposition was to explain and list the complaints about the earlier Tariff of abominations. Calhoun explained that he wanted the states to join together against the tariff to nullify it but he received no support by writing his feelings.

    South Carolina did not agree with the tariff of abominations so they boycotted. They did not pay what was supposed to be paid according to the tariff. If Andrew Jackson made them pay, they threatened to succeed from the union.

    Andrew Jackson was tired of the drama being created by South Carolina so he imposed a new bill that gave him the right to use military force to make South Carolina pay the tariffs. These troops were never actually sent but they were threatening.

    Robert Haynes made a counter attack on Andrew Jackson by arguing that states can nullify laws that they think are unconstitutional. According to this statement, Jackson was wrong and it allowed South Carolina to either succeed or go to war.

    Tensions over the tariffs were rising between South Carolina and the government. Andrew Jackson had no other choice but to impose a bill that allowed him to use armed forces to collect tariffs from South Carolina. As stated by Haynes', if they believed it unconstitutional, South Carolina had to power to nullify this bill, so they did. They nullified the tariffs and the Force Bill to save themselves.

    The Nullification crisis was increasing so Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun proposed the Compromise tariff, which was to gradually decrease the problematic tariffs. The pleased both states who fought for nullification and states that were okay with tariffs.

    South Carolina Repeal of Nullification
    In reaction to the compromise, South Carolina agreed to repeal some of the before set nullifications. While the North was okay with tariffs, the South was not because they had a greater impact on their economy. This nullification repeal was the end of the nullification crisis that was going on between South Carolina and the government.
