Tariffs of 1828
This is a tariff that will help the industries of the Northern states. As a result this would anger many southern because they weren't getting the same treatment. This would let to John Calhoun making the South Carolina Exposition and Protest. -
South Carolina Exposition and Protest
This was made my John Calhoun but his name was never stated on it. It stated that the state would obey only if it was an amendment but it wasn't so it was unconstitutional and that the states have the power to veto it. -
Tariff of 1832
This was a slightly different Fromm the 1828 tariff but South Carolina was still angered from the tariff so they would adopt the the Ordinance of Nullification -
Ordinance of Nullification
This was an ordinance to state that both tariffs weren't far and that they were "null and void." The ordinance threaten to secede the federal government if they try to enforce the tariff but as a result this didn't work and the ordinance failed. -
Proclamation to the People of South Carolina
This was issued by president Jackson in response to the Ordinance of Nullification. This stated that the federal government was on top of the states and it warned that it is treason if South Carolina tries to disband from the union. It stated that it was not unconstitutional on the tariffs. -
Force Bill
This was in response to the Ordinance of Nullification. This was a bill that allows the president to have the power to use the military if the states refused to comply with the tariffs that are already set.
