North America 1700-1800

  • Stono Rebellion

    80 slaves set out for Spanish Florida under a banner that said "Liberty". They burned plantations and killed 20 white settlers. A local militia defeated them. The survivors that were not executed were sold to sugar plantations in the West Indies.
  • Seven Years War

    George Washington led a group of British soldiers in attacking a French force. A French diplomat was killed in the attack. This later led to the start of the Seven Years War.
  • Pontiac's War

    Neolin received a vision from the Master of Life. This vision told him that the Natives would not be able to enter Heaven without throwing off the corrupting influence of the Europeans. Natives, partly led by Pontiac, began attacking British forts and frontier settlements.
  • Royal Proclamation

    King George III forbade settlement west of the Appalachian mountains after the Seven Years War. The Americans disobeyed this proclamation believing they had fought for and deserved that land.
  • Sugar Act of 1764

    British Parliament passed the Sugar Act of 1764. This provided for strong custom enforcements of the duties on refined sugar and molasses imported from non-British Caribbean sources.
  • Stamp Act

    British Parliament enacted the Stamp Act to get revenue from the colonies. This included a duty on newspapers and commercial documents.
  • Townshend Acts

    The Townshend Acts were a series of 4 measures passed by the British Parliament taxing goods imported into the colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    A crowd gathered outside of a Custom House and tormented a young sentry. Soldiers came to his aid and fired into the crowd. Five Bostonians were killed. The perception of this was biased towards the colonists being peaceful. This generated sympathy for Boston and anger at Britain.
  • Boston Tea Party

    In protest of the Tea Act, the Sons of Liberty dressed as Mohawk Indians and dumped 342 chests of tea into the harbor.
  • First Continental Congress

    The First Continental Congress convened. This group wrote the Declaration of Rights and Grievances.
  • American Revolution Began

    British soldiers went to seize the arms and powder stores of the local militia. The militia was warned of their approach and met them in battle at Lexington Green.
  • Declaration of Independence published

    Second Constitutional Congress published the Declaration of Independence that stated the principles our country was founded on.
  • Revolutionary War Ended

    After 2 years of a peace treaty being worked out in Paris, the Revolutionary War officially ended.
