  • Begins at Harvard

Thomas Kuhn began his college education at Harvard in 1940 where he studied physics and eventually got his Ph.D. in physics in 1949. This is where he started to develop some of his theories according to him and he started to think about the philosophy and history of science. A small video summary of the paradigm shift:

  • Harvard Junior Fellow

Becomes a Harvard Junior Fellow which allows him to switch from his regular school studies and study into expanded other areas which interested him, mainly the history and philosophy of science which he enjoyed much more. It's also here that he realized that the major scientific break periods and theories were taught as hard indisputable facts and not as things that were developed over time and evolved into the form that they came to be.

    Teaches at Harvard

After his fellowship, he was awarded the ability to be an assistant professor and allowed to teach general classes, mainly the history of science. Here he taught the class in a view he saw more fitting and that reflects his thoughts that would transform in the paradigm shift later. Teaching about how major turns in science were the result of gradual changes and an eventual overturning of the system, instead of the previous method.

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is Published
After his delving into teaching and becoming a full professor the year prior he developed this book where he first coined the paradigm shift which he had been developing for a few years. He structured the book as a history of science and using it as an example and proof for his new theory. This is also here where the phases of a paradigm shift were first laid out and detailed.
