  • The Diary

    Winston writes down his thoughts and feelings in his recently acquired diary even though he realizes this counts as a thoughtcrime and an act of rebellion against his political party. As he writes in his diary, he realizes that he has written the words "DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER" multiple times in his diary. After this, there is a knock on Winston's door.

  • Comrade

    Winston creates Comrade Ogilvy to replace Comrade Withers in the historical records in order to keep the illusion that Big Brother is without error and knows all.

  • A New Language

    Syme comes up with the idea to create a new language with limited vocabulary so that rebellious thoughts become impossible.

  • The Dark Haired Girl

    Winston first meets the dark haired girl who he believes to be either a spy or someone apart of the thought police. Winston's view of this girl is changed when she slips him an "I love you".

  • Winston and Julia in a Field

    Winston and Julia are able to safely meet in a place where Big Brother is shown to have no influence and share many short moments together.

  • Winston reveals his dislike of rats

    Winston revealing that he does not like rats is important towards the end of the story because it impacts his actions with Julia.

  • Winston learns how to sabotage the Party

    Winston meets with O'Brien to show that he will do whatever he can to witness the party's downfall. While meeting with O'Brien he learns about the Brotherhood and is informed by O'Brien that he will shortly receive a book by Emmanuel Goldstein.

  • Winston and Julia get caught

    With Charrington turning out to be a member of the thought police, Winston and Julia are imprisoned due to the thought police learning about their love affair.

  • Whatever the Party says is accurate and Correct

    O'Brien imprisons and tortures Winston in order to remove any remaining piece of humanity that he may have in order to acknowledge Big Brother and the Party's power.

  • Winston's Betrayal

    Winston is sent to Room 101 where O'Brien uses rats in order to get Winston to betray Julia by using his worst fear against him in order to get him to betray the person he loves, and give that love to Big Brother instead.
