John Dowland was one the premier luteists during his life. He brought the voice being accompanied by a chordophone into popularity. -

During the Baroque counterpoint dominated the music sphere. This means composers were focused on having multiple lines all running at the same time and music tended towards the chaotic side. -

Bach was a renounced composers during the baroque. He was a master of the organ and keyboard and is well known for his counterpoint and fugues. -

We are currently in the modern period of music and it continues to develop as we live. Computer generated music and an emphasis on anything being able to be music is normal. -

Philip Glass is one of the premier composers of the 20th century. His claim to fame is his use of minimalism in which there is no melody. However, the music relies on phase shifting and layers of various sounds.
