My Social Studies Experience

  • Kindergarten

We had a unit on Native Americans, which I know is no longer done at that school. We were given Native American names. I was Pink Rose Fox. We got to learn from the teepee that day and play with animal skins and bow and arrows.

    My Social Studies Experience

  • Kindergarten

We sat in a circle on the carpet, as our teacher explained to us, in the simplest possible terms, what was going on in New York. Students asked questions and we were sent home early. The following week we talked more about the event, but nothing about terrorism, really.
  • 1st Grade

My first grade teacher incorporated celebrating lots of holidays in our curriculum. We learned about and celebrated holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. day and Cinco de Mayo (the two that I remember best). We would also have parents come in and talk to us about holidays that they celebrate and how they celebrate at home.
  • 2nd Grade

Every Friday we would listen to popular songs or poems written by diverse artists. We would listen through once, then sing or speak along, and then break down, line by line, what the author's message was. By the end of the year, I remember we wrote about our own experiences and some students even chose to perform them.
  • 3rd Grade

The only social studies related activity that I remember from 3rd grade was an assignment where we had to go home and create a presidential campaign poster for Bush and Kerry. I remember my teacher telling us that donkeys and elephants represented the different parties and I spent more time drawing those animals all over my paper than researching the candidates.
  • 4th Grade

Our whole school held a Nationality Night over at the middle school. My Finnish grandparents came and brought my brothers and I Suomi shirts and Pula bread. I remember feeling very proud that I was the only student representing Finland.
  • 5th Grade

Our teacher & principal told us that we could plan a party. We came up with plans and fun ideas. Our principal came back in, to tell us that we weren't allowed a budget anymore because another class needed it. Later he came back to say that the party was only allowed to be during our recess period. He kept coming in with worse news and finally they told us that the party was off. We were so upset and thought this was unfair. This was my teacher's way of introduce a new unit on Native Americans.
  • 7th Grade

Creating game board based on something we learned in class: my board game was on Lewis and Clark.
  • 8th Grade

My teacher introduced the idea of Current Events, and offered these lessons to us every Friday. They were a fun break from our constitution studies and I especially loved making my own political cartoon.
