    The earthquake in Portugal was a magnitude 9 earthquake. There were 20,000 people were killed due to this earthquake and tsunami. The waves crossed the Atlantic Ocean and were 23 feet tall when they hit land. This event also caused several fires in the area.
  • Krakatoa Eruption

    This tsunami was caused by a volcanic eruption under the sea. The eruption caused a submarine landslide which rose the water level to create the tsunami. By the end, 165 villages were destroyed and 36,000 people were killed.

    This was a magnitude 8.1 earthquake that created a tsunami which started in Alaska. The tsunami moved across the ocean and made its way to the Hawaii Islands. The aftermath resulted in more than 160 deaths.

    A magnitude 9.5 earthquake in Chile had created a tsunami. This tsunami had traveled across the Pacific Ocean for 15 hours before it hit Hawaii. Fortunately, the death toll was not extremely high with just 61 deaths.

    This magnitude 7.8 earthquake was strong enough to build up a tsunami. This tsunami was created in the Sea of Japan and hit Okushiri Island. People in Japan are prepared for tsunamis, so the casualties were not extremely high; 120 people were killed

    This magnitude 7.1 earthquake created a tsunami that is a little more interesting than normal. The earthquake had created a landslide that was underwater which had triggered a tsunami to come forth. Unfortunately, 2,100 people were killed because of this.

    The Sumatra earthquake was the third largest earthquake in recorded history with a magnitude of 9.1. There was no warning system in the area, so people had no idea what was going on. Plus most of the people had no idea what to do for a situation like this. After a series of tsunamis had hit land, there was a count of a devastating 230,000 deaths.

    The earthquake was a magnitude of 8.1 and had a tsunami hit the Samoan Islands. The waves were a towering 46 feet tall. There were about 200 deaths, and, sadly, most of them were children.

    The earthquake in Chile had a magnitude of 8.8 which created a tsunami, damaging a majority of coastal towns. Chile wasn't the only area affected by the earthquake, however. There were waves that had caused minor damages to San Diego in California, and there were waves that hit Japan. The waves had caused $66.7 million in repairs, and out of everyone affected, there were 700 casualties total.

    The most recent tsunami was caused by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake which, naturally, hit the Tohoku region of Japan. Citizens had 12-15 minutes to prepare for this tsunami, and they didn't think it would be too horrible. Because of the short notice and the underestimation of the waves, over 20,000 people were killed.
