    The first Norman King was William the conqueror who won the battle of Hastings against Anglo-Saxons. The Normans came from northern France. The Norman built wooden houses covered in a mixture of mud, straw,and dung that kept them warm in the winter. Norman also built stone castles. Some of them are still standing today.

    The battle was fought about six miles north-west. The battle took place on Caldbec Hill. The Norman army by William. Normans attacked with cavalry and archers, but Harold's shield wall defensive position was hard to break down. The fighting started in the morning and continued all threw the day. King Harold was killed by a shot in the eye with a Norman arrow.
