Mass Extinction

  • 7 BCE

    Cretaceous Extinction

Beginning around 66 million years ago, 75% of species went extinct. The cause of this extinction was a massive comet or asteroid impact. Some important species that went extinct are the diatoms, rudist bivalves, and ammonoids.

    Triassic Extinction

Beginning just around 201.3 million years ago, the Triassic Extinction is to have said been caused by climate change and rising sea levels due to sudden releases of large amounts of carbon dioxide. Approximately 75% of species went extinct. Some species that went extinct were the marine reptiles, ammonoids, gastropods, and brachiopods.

    Permian Extinction

Beginning almost 251 million years ago, the Permian extinction eliminated about 93% of the species that lived during this time. The cause of this extinction is acid rain followed by a massive release of volcanic acid. Some major species that went extinct are the corals, crinoids, acanthodians, fusulinids.
  • 4 BCE

    Devonian Extinction

Beginning about 375 million years ago, the Devonian Extinction eliminated approximately 75% of its species. There are many causes of this extinction such as sea levels lowering, asteroid impacts, plate tectonics and climate change. Some of the major species that went extinct are Tabulet corals, trilobites, brachiopods, and jawless fishes.

    Ordovician Extinction

Beginning approximately 488.3 million years ago, the Ordovician Extinction was caused by sea levels falling. Just a little bit over 85% of the species went extinct. Some major species that went extinct were brachiopods, bryozoans, trilobites, and graptolites.

    Life Begins

Approximately 3.8 billion years ago, (700,000,000 years after Earth Began) Life began. One theory on how life began is lightning struck. Electric sparks can generate amino acids and sugars from an atmosphere loaded with water, methane, ammonia and hydrogen.

    Earth Begins

Approximately 4.5 billion years ago, Earth began. It began when the Solar System was relatively young, so around age 250,000, Earth formed.
