    Was a strategy used by Canada to discourage immigration from China by putting a fixed fee as a head tax.
    Canada wanted immigrants from British ancestry and restricted immigration from Asia.
  • Komagata Maru Incident

    Komagata Maru Incident
    The Komagata Maru was a Japanese ship which allowed people from India to enter into Canada only if they came directly from India. After two months they were sent back as no ships route were direct from Canada to India.
    It was important because India protested Canada's immigration policies and the incident prevented harmful diseases from entering Canada.
  • Interment of Ukrainian Canadians

    Interment of Ukrainian Canadians
    During the beginning of World War l people of Ukrainian descent were sent to internment camps because of the war that Ukraine fell within enemy territory. People were arrested under the War Measures Act because they were seen as a threat. Mostly men lost their homes and worked labour.
    Many people were treated wrong for being a certain race and that Canada shouldn't have the right to treat others this way in the future which affected immigration policies.

    People of Italian descent were sent to internment camps when Italy declared war on Canada. Men and some of their families had their property seized and worked labour for government.
    This event shows that people were discriminated against based on race and Canada has learnt that it wasn't right to confine these people based on race and fixed the way immigrants are treated in their country.

    During World War ll, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour and the Japanese Canadians were treated with questionable behaviour. Since Japanese origins were seen as a threat, under the War Measures Act, they were moved to the west with what they could only carry. They lost most of their possessions.
    This was an important event to immigration because it shows how immigrants were poorly treated in the past history of Canada by race and culture.

    Canada started to accept refugees steadily from countries in need instead of helping countries crisis by crisis.
    This act helped immigration because it made it a category for refugees so it was easier for refugees to transfer to Canada who were in danger in their home country.

    Singh Decision
    Satnam Singh traveled from India to Canada to seek refugee status but Canada's government rejected his case. The Supreme Court disagreed with the government as it violated Canadas Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
    It was important because people were given the right of a fair hearing to gain refugee status and get full necessities while waiting for their hearing.

    Some goals of the Act is to:
