Major Events in Language Learning Timeline

  • Prenatal Development

    In this stage, babies are very sensitive to sound. Babies can listen to the sound of their mother's language and start learning in the womb.
  • 2-6 months

    During these months, infants begin to make sounds and coo. During 6 months of age, infants begin to babble and repeat syllabuls. Infants also begin to figure out words they have heard before.
  • 6-12 months

    babies will use preverbal gestures like showing what they are doing or use behaviors to send information to who they are trying to communicate with. Children at this stage will be able to say their first words, and comprehension increases vastly.
  • 18-24 months

    Children start to put more words together and are able to expand their vocabulary.
  • 2-5 years

    The child will be able to start using short sentences or phrases, follow direction, and have short conversations with their family or friends. Children will be able to talk to themselves and tell people what they need ("i am hungry"). At age 5 children will be able to use sentences like an average adult and be able to determine what different words mean. They also will have better problem-solving skills.
  • 6-9 years old

    The child will be able to read books suited for their age and reiterate what they read, tell time and understand commands children at this age might also be more honest. At ages 8-9 the child will be able to use their creative sides like drawing and other ways to express themselves.
  • 10-12

    Children will begin to act like an adult. their communication systems are vastly improved. Children at this age are also social butterflies and have phones and communicate with friends. many children will write in diaries and talk about the problems they have.
