Major Eras of US History

    Westward Expansion

    This time period began with an increase of railroads and in mining. There was a significant growth in the ranching and cattle industry, as well as advances in farming and agriculture. They also experienced conflict with Native Americans.

    The Gilded Age

    Industrialization began. Monopolies started to present themselves. There was an increase in immigrants seeking a new start in America. There was also a major growth in cities, or urbanization.

    U.S. Imperialism

    Teddy Roosevelt was president during this time. There was growth of U.S. involvement overseas. The Spanish American War took place in 1898, and Hawaii was annexed.

    Progressive Era

    Democratic reforms were taking place now. Since they were taking over, a regulation of monopolies was needed. Consumer protection became important, as well as environmental conservation, women’s suffrage, and prohibition.

    World War 1

    Germany sunk the British ocean liner, Lusitania, causing outrage. The U.S. intercepted a telegram, the Zimmerman Telegram, telling of an alliance between Mexico and Germany. Trench warfare took place during this time. The League of Nations was formed.

    The Roaring Twenties

    This was the age of Jazz music and flappers. Prohibition of alcohol occurred. The KKK broadened it's targeted group, still broadcasting the overall message of white supremacy. The teaching of evolution was brought up and challenged in the Scopes trial.

    The Great Depression

    The stock market crashed, leading to the Great Depression. There was extremely high unemployment. Herbert Hoover was the first president of the time, but he just made things worse. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the next president, proposed his "New Deal."

    World War 2

    Adolf Hitler became leader of Germany and started the Holocaust. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The U.S. created the atomic bomb and used it against Japan, which caused their surrender.

    The Cold War

    The Soviet Union and the U.S. were in a quarrel. Containment was America's attempt at stopping the spread of Communism. An arms race and a space race were between the two. We got to the moon. There were many spies on both sides. The Red Scare happened.

    The Vietnam War

    Part of the Cold War was the Vietnam war, in which America was with the South while the Soviet Union was with the communist North.
    Lyndon B. Johnson was president and created a war draft. This started an antiwar movement and a demand for peace.

    The Civil Rights Movement

    Martin Luther King, Jr. became the face and voice of the Civil Rights Movement. He delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. Rosa Parks stood up to segregation on the bus. Sit Ins took place. Brown vs. Board of Education started equality in schools.

    Late 20th Century

    The Cold War is over. Inflation occurs, and there is an oil crisis. There is a lot of talk about the Bible and conservative resurgence. Technology takes off and advances rapidly.

    21st Century U.S.

    Globalization is happening. The 9/11 terrorist attacks strike, changing America forever. This causes the War on Terror. Hurricane Katrina destroys many homes and lives. Then, there is the 2008 economic recession. Obama is the first black president.
