The journals of Charles Darwin and his changing views on Evolution
  • Origin of Species

Darwin introduces his theory of evolution. His theory consists of two main points. His first point is that diverse groups of animals all come from or evolve from one or a few common ancestors, meaning they are connected in some way. His second point is that the mechanism by which this evolutions takes place is what he calls natural selection. Natural selection he says is when an organism changes over time to adapt to its environment to improve survival and generate more offspring.
  • The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication

In this book Darwin explores the mechanisms of variation. This consists of the principle of use and disuse, which basically is that the parts of an organism that the organism uses most will become more developed. Variation also consists of the principle of the correlation of parts, which is that a species existence relies on how its parts work together and the role of the environment in causing variation.
  • Descent of Man

Darwin applies his theory of evolution which previously published was about animals to man. He details his theory of sexual selection, which is an adaptation distinct from, yet interconnected with natural selection. Sexual Selection is when certain traits become evolved or enhanced in order for someone to attract a mate.
  • Expression of the Emotions of Man and Animals

In this book Darwin explains that, humans and animals as well, show emotion through small behaviors. He believed that emotion has an evolutionary history and that that history could be traced across cultures and species.
