  • 1215

    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta
    there was a political issue so the Magna Carta was made. It was made in Runnymede. The nobles of England made it, and the outcome was the king's power is reduced more rights are given to the people.
  • Mayflower Compact

    Mayflower Compact
    The people setting sail to America had to make a government to keep order. Male pilgrims made the Mayflower Compact. It took place overseas and was established as soon as they landed in America. It set rules amongst the crew to keep order.
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    Civil wars were going on all over England so Parliament made the English Bill of Rights. It was written and made in New York City. Because of the English Bill of Rights it aloud people to have free speech and the right to vote.
  • Cato's Letters

    Cato's Letters
    The king at the time had a very heavy hand on the rules. Authors used fake names, Cato the Younger and Cato the Elder and published newspapers against the king called Cato's Letters. These letters became so popular that it became a book and was very inspirational in the colonies.
  • Mercantilism

    When King George the Third took the throne he tried to take as much money out of the British colonies as possible. This took place in Great Britain. This made colonial businesses suffer and made colonists angry.
  • The French and Indian War

    Great Britain was in a financial crisis and placed heavy taxes on the colonists. This took place in the American colonies and the French and Indian War gave Britain more land but it made the colonists made about taxes.
  • Stamp act

    expensive taxes were placed on newspaper and legal documents. colonists were outraged because there was no representation for them in parliament. The taxes were placed on American colonies. This caused American colonists to boycott British goods.
  • Declaratory act

    The Stamp Act is repealed and the Declaratory Act is passed. The act states that Parliament can make decisions for the American colonists on their behalf. People became even madder and boycotted once again. This took place in the American colonies.
  • The Townshed act

    This act released more taxes on the colonist like glass, tea, paper,
    and lead. This again taking place in the American colonies, relations with the colonies and Great Britain worsen. The colonists bring back the boycott they used for the Stamp Act.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Soldiers were holding back an angry mob when one of them fired their gun and the rest firing with him, killing 5 people. A "patriot" mob was involved throwing snowballs and rocks at the soldiers. This helped unite colonists to fight against the British.
  • The Tea act

    The Tea Act is another act that says that the British East India Company has the right to ship tea to the colonies without paying
    most of the taxes usually placed on tea. The act also allowed the company to bypass colonial merchants and sell tea directly to shopkeepers at low prices. This was the turning point for the colonies so they started fighting with the British.
  • The Intolerable Act

    The Intolerable Act
    American colonists dressed up as Native Americans to protest the acts and in response to this the British release the Intolerable Acts. This took away the right to a fair trial and allowed British soldiers to go into their homes as they pleased.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    Colonists were sick of the taxes placed on them so they decided to dress up as Native Americans and dump 342 chests of tea overboard. The British responded with the Intolerable Acts.
  • The battle for Lexington and Concord

    The battle for Lexington and Concord
    After the first continental congress, King George responded with an army. These two battles were the first revolutionary war. Because of this people began to question themselves their attachment to Britain.
  • The Second Continental Congress

    The Second Continental Congress
    Colonists started debating what to do in terms of breaking away from Britain or not. While they did this Thomas Paine made a book called Common Sense. It talked about how people should start looking for independence. Finally, Congress made a decision to break away from Britain.
  • The First Continental Congress

    Delegates sent a document called the Continental Congress to King George the third. They had met in Philidelphia to make the document stating that they are given their rights back.

    King George the Third and Parliament were making lots of demands on the colonies. people became fed up and began discussing breaking away from Britain. Thomas Paine made a book on this called common sense in Philadelphia. Six months later the Declaration of Independence is signed.

    Congress makes the Declaration of Independence and later revise it. This states that they are independent of Britain and was based around some of the ideas from political thinkers.
