During his teenage years he was enrolled in Preparatory National School of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and remained there for his undergraduate work in chemistry and chemical engineer -
Undergraduate thesis
In 1948, he began graduate courses although he was still required to complete an undergraduate thesis project. But he worked on it in an chemical company called syntex. Even though he was really young and was still a student he demonstrated talent in chemical laboratory techniques. He got to work with Carl Djerassi and George Rosenkranz. -
Progesterone
At 25 years old Luis Miramontes began working with Djerassi and Rosenkranz on a project to develop a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone. There was already progesterone during time but they wanted to make it better -
norethindrone
In 1951 under the direction of Djerassi Rosenkranz, Miramontes worked on the final steps in to create a synthetic progestin. The synthetic progestin was called norethindrone. They did experiments on animals and then on humans and they found out that the norethindrone was eight time stronger than natural norethindrone. That wasn't the only advantage natural norethindrone had to be taken by injections but the synthetic norethindrone could be taken orally -
The pill gets approved in the U.S
In 1962 the FDA approved norethindrone for contraceptive use and was listed as the 40 most important inventions since the year 1794 because it was and oral contraceptive. -
