  • The Sickness

On this date, a man became sick when he was "struck with the sun." This man was Robert Frazer, and he was likely sick because of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. It was surprising that he did not die, because Lewis bled him to make him feel better!
  • The Peaceful Trading

The expedition showed off and traded with the Missouri and Oto Indians. This was the first encounter between the two race. It was a peaceful encounter.
  • The Sioux

This day was when there was a rather stressful encounter with the warrior Sioux tribe. The Sioux had control of part of the river that the expidition had to cross, and they demanded one of the much-needed boats in echange for crossage. There was almost a fight, but chief Black Buffalo was negotiated them out of it.
  • The Weather

The expidition was forced to stay with the Mandans for the winter because of the frigid weather. It was 45 degrees below freezing on the 17th of December. This was the coldest many had ever seen the weather.
  • Fort Mandan

During an unspecified date, the Mandans performed their "buffalo calling" ceremonie and hunt buffaloes with the members of the expidition. A boy contracted frostbite in his toes, and Lewis has to amputate them without main medication or a surgical blade.
  • The Baby

On this date Sacagawea had her baby. His name was Jean Baptiste. This occured at the Fort Mandan.
  • The Animal

The expidition was greatly affected when they first saw the grizzly bear. Lewis had at first thought that the grizzlies were not as fierce as they were said to be, but he changed his mind. The fierce bears would chase the members all across the Plane and were very difficult to kill.
  • The Killing

On the morning of July 27, 1805, eight blackfoot Native Americans attempted to steal the expedition's horses and guns. A fight followed and two of the Native Americans were killed. This was the only time those in the expidition and those the Native Americans killed each other.
  • The Occurance in Present Day Idaho

Lewis had camped near modern day Tendon, Idaho. He happened upon three Native American girls. The three had never seen whites before.
  • The Shoshone

Lewis and Clark come across a Shoshone village. It happens that the chief, Cameahwait, is Sacagawea's brother. Lewis negotiates with the Native Americans and recieves twenty-nine horses and one mule.
  • The Plant

The camas plant greatly affected the members of the expedition, and in a very negative way. They had just crossed the Bitteroots, where they had little food, so they filled themselves with camas plants and salmon. This caused the whole expedition to become sick.
  • The Help

A NexzPierce tribe had helped the expidition on the stage of the journey that was close to the Pacific Ocean. A chief named Twisted Hair showed those in the party how to create canoes of of trees. This allowed the settlers to move along with greater speed.
  • The Fort Clatsop

The expedition moves into the new Fort Clatsop. They are far away from home, but they still observe Christmas. The captains give tobacco and hankerchiefs to the men.
  • The Death

Near Sioux City, Sergeant Floyd died. He was the only one who died on this expidition, and historians believed he died because of appendicitis. Floyd's Bluff and Floyd's Stream are named after him.
