    When the haitian revolution started, it was lead by Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines. The success of the american revolution inspired slaves in other countries to team up and revolt. The slaves were being oppressed by the spanish and wanted their freedom. Their was more slaves than the spanish so they outnumbered the french by too much. Their masters used brutal methods to keep them powerless so they eventually were tired of it.They declared independence from France.

    By 1801, Toussaint had taken control of the whole island and freed all of the enslaved africans. In January 1802, 30,000 french troops landed in saint Domingue to removed his power. He made an agreement to halt the revolution if they end slavery. They blamed him for causing another fight so they sent him to a prison where he died in 1803. His lieutenant, Jean-jacques Dessalines took up the fight for freedom. On January 1, 1804, General dessalines declared the colony an independent country.

    In this revolution the Indians and the mestizos were the leaders. In 1810, Padre Miguel Hidalgo took the first step towards independence. On September 16, 1810, he gathered the church and issued a call for rebellion against the Spanish. The army unruly numbered 80,000 men. The Spanish and the creoles were scared of losing their land so they fought back. In 1811, their army defeated hidalgo. The rebels rallied around another leader called Jose Maria Morelos and led the revolution for 4 years.

    In the South American Revolution the leaders were Simon Bolivar and Jose de San Martin. The social classes that lead this revolution were the creoles. They declared independence from spain. The revolution started when venezuela declared independence from spain from 1811. Bolivar went into exile 2 times during the revolution. In August 1819, Bolivar led over 2,000 soldiers over to the andes what is columbia now and won a decisive victory. In 1821 he won Venezuela's independence.

    In 1815, a creole officer, Augustin de Iturbide defeated morelos. Events took another place when a revolution in Spain put more power out there. Creoles in Mexico were feared of the loss of their privileges in the Spanish Colony so they united in support of Mexico's independence from Spain. The man that defeated morelos proclaimed independence in 1821.

    In 1821, San Martin planned to drive the remaining forces out of Lima, Peru but he needed a much larger force to do it. Bolivar and Martin discussed the problem in 1822. Bolivar's army went off to defeat the army in the battle of Ayacucho (Peru) on December 9, 1824. In this last battle of independence the spanish colonies in Latin America won their freedom.

    8,000 brazilians signed a petition asking Dom Pedro to rule the revolution. He agreed. On September 7, 1822, he officially declared independence. Brazil had won it's independence in a bloodless revolution.
