    The Compromise of 1850
    It consisted of laws admitting California as a free state, creating Utah and New Mexico territories with the question of slavery in each to be determined by popular sovereignty. The compromise was very life changing. If it were.t for the Compromise of 1850, there would not be as much on the west. This was a controversy witht the North and South.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The Fugitave Slave Act was passed to make it illegal for a slave to escape and for anyone to aid a slave while escaping. The Northerners were forced to turn in any escaped slaves in the North to their right fully owners. The Northerners were not quite estatic about this new act that was being passed.
  • "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

    "Uncle Tom's Cabin"
    The "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was a book published by Harriet Stowe. The book had a very antislavery speal to it. This caused the civil war because it changed the way the Northerners and southerners depict slavery.
  • Republican Party

    Republican Party
    The Republican Party was formed in 1854 after the Free Soil and Know Nothings. They opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act and they also opposed slavery in territories. The violence over slavery made them stronger. This event led to the Civil War because of it's aspiration to minimize slavery.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    "Bleeding Kansas" was a nickname for the act of violence that was happening during the settling of the Kansas Territory. Also pushed the idea of popular sovereignty. Violence soon erupted in spite of the fight for control. This led to the Civil war because the North and South faught over the Nebraska Territory because of the uneligibility of slavery.

    Dred Scott's Decision
    The Dred Scott Decision was a case that questioned whether slave owners should be allowed to bring their slaves to the Western territories. The decision enflamed the conflict between the north and the south even more.
  • Panic of 1857

    Panic of 1857
    The Panic of 1857 was the time period when the AMerican people were getting devasted. The banks and companies in which people were invested in began to fail. Instead of returning paper money to the citizens, they had gold and silver. Banks began to collapse and people began to lose their jobs. This lead to the Economic Depression. :Later this event led to the Civil war because it made the Southerners and Northerners realize each others differnces in political terms.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid
    John Brown and his army of only 18 men marched down to Harper's Ferry in Virginia. He seized the armed weapons and the ammunition. His invasion created even more of an anomosity between the North and the South. The Southerners labeled Brown as a martyr after his devious plan. This event caused the Southerners to believe that more people from the north will try to stunt their progression with slavery.

    Abraham Lincoln Election
    Lincoln was elected the 16th president while apart of the Republic Party. In the Lincoln-Douglass campaign they depicted their future with less slavery. Also they believed a state or territory should have the choice to choose between a free or slave state. Many southerners wanted the opposing party to win so they had a reason to leave the Union.
  • South Carolina Seceded

    South Carolina Seceded
    SOuth Carolina was the first state to secede, which meant, the first to leave the union. After the election of President Lincoln, the South Carolinians perceived a threat pertaining to the issue of slavery. The Southerners government was becoming to strong and decided to secede. President LIncoln said that he would fight to keep the Southern states in the United States. That is the beginning of the AMerican Civil War.
