    the depatureJoseph Hopkins is saying goodbye to his mother and sister while he packs his little trinkets and memborbilla. He knows he may die in the war and that he may not return. But he is determined and stays steadfast on his way to Detroit, Michigan.

    Joeph's army camp and barracksJoseph Hopkins has left his family and joined the union fight against the south. He has left hudson and arrived at his assigned army camp in Detroit, Michigan. Here starts his life in the civil war. He will learn basic attacks and stategy in the field of artillery and the mastery over the cannon.

    Civil war lifeJoseph's life in the camp had very little excitement, but plenty of drills. He drilled almost twice a day every day. He wrote letters to his family and friends, slept, ate and drilled constantly.

    The Civil War CannonJoseph has been drilling with cannons and learning new flanking movements. He now is an experienced soldier with the skills to use a cannon. Later that day he performed in a dress parade with his new union attire in front of Govenor Blair, and Luietenant colonel(not specified). Joseph is proud to be a union soldier.

    Parson BrownlowJoseph has been marched with his platoon many a times, but this time it's special. When his platoon and regiment marched through town they were greeted by an applauding crowd and speech about the war from Parsons Brownlow.

    Union soldiers Joseph has gone with one of his fellow soldiers to counter meat an order of supplies, when he came back his platoon proceeded to Mr. John Sic's place and ate chicken to their hearts content. After their meal they were taken by "a calvary of young ladies" wich they gladly welcomed. In the late evening they went to a party at John Livermoore's house.

    Where the picture was takenJoseph is able to visit his family and friends on this sunny saturday and enjoy himself. He went to Hudson with his friends and decided to get a picture taken of him for his family and friends before he went back.

    Horse drawn artilleryJoseph has now learned to run cannon drills with horses, he is amazed by their beauty and strength. He has been drilling with horse drawn cannons all day now and has actually started to enjoy it. He also loves ot help take care for the horses.

    The CalvalryThis day in history joseph had his picture taken again, but this time he was on a horse. He wanted the people at home to know he would be joining the calvary soon.

    Washington D.CJoseph is proud to be a union soldier, and fight for the union until his dying breath. His regiment leaves for Washington today. He will protect his countries capital even if it means certain death.

    Union camp in chattanooga(Unfortunately Joseph had most of his diaries destroyed when he died so his diaries relivivg the perils of 1863-1864 are unfortunately not available to me) Joseph wakes up on this sunday morning to find an ugly mass of gray clouds outside as far as the eye can see in Chattanooga, Tennesee. Joseph is tired of the war, but he is thankful to have survived it all. His whole battery had to start the new year with half rations for everybody.

    Shermans march to the seaJoseph while readind the news paper discovered that Charleston and Augusta were being evacuated as General Sherman marched down through the south leaving a devastating path of destruction and death. He was glad that the war was going well for the union. Later that day he went drilling with the cannons and rode his horse named Ulysses(after the general) around the camp.

    Slavery suffrageJoseph over heard a debate between Soldiers over the suffredge of the african americans, in the end everyone agreed that suffredge should be extended to the african Americans. The rest of day was boring for Joseph, he received no mail, and for the rest of the day it rained.
  • Lookout Mountain

    Battle of Lookout MountainJoseph and a few of his comrades were assigned to go to lookout mountain, on their way they stopped by the hospital to visit Geo. W. Jennings. After the visit they headed up the mountain. The group stolled around the top of mountain and visited a spot where a photographer had falle of the mountain and taken his wife down with him. A very creepy place indeed.

    George Washington accentAs Sherman leaves the south in ruins, Joseph has another disscusion with his comrades about the question of who is more important, George Washington for protecting America or Christopher Columbus for bringing Europe to America? In the end they decided that Columbus was more important because he discovered the land that George Washington had to protect.
