    Jose de San Martin was born February 25, 1778. He was born in Yapeyú Argentina. He was 1 of 4 children to Juan de San Martin, and Gregoria Matorras del Ser.

    Education

    From 1785 to 1789 Jose was educated at the Seminary of Nobles in Madrid. He then left there to join the Murcia infantry regiment. He was there to begin his military career as a cadet.

    Loyal Officer

    For 20 years he was a loyal officer of the Spanish monarch fighting against the Moors in Oran. The Moors are referred to as Muslim inhabitant. Also a Moor is a northwestern African Muslim.

    In 1798 the British held him captive for over a year. Also he was fighting against the Portuguese in the war of oranges during this time. The war started on May 20 1801 to June 9 1801.

    In 1808 San Martin followed Napoleon’s occupation of Spain. For two years he served the Sevilla junta that was leading the war of the imprisoned Spanish king Ferdinand VII. He then was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel.

    In 1812 San Martin resigned from the Spanish army. Resigned basically means that he retired. Then he sailed to Buenos Aires to join the patriot forces.

    When he was working for the Buenos Aires government, San Martín distinguished himself as a trainer and leader of soldiers, and, after winning a skirmish against forces at San Lorenzo, on the right bank of the Paraná River. Distinguished means that he didn’t ask to be leader he demanded it. Skirmish means an irregular fight between small parts of armies. February 3 1813

    Chile

    Loyalist recaptured Chile. So San Martin had to fight his way westward. Which he accomplished between January 18 and February 8, 1817, partly by a sincerity, which caused the Spanish commander to divide his forces in order to guard all possible routes.

    O'Higgins
    On February 12 he surprised and defeated the royalists at Casas de Chacabuco. But he refused the offer of the governorship of Chile in favour of O’Higgins. He did that because he did not wish to be diverted from his main objective. 1817

    He died August 17, 1850. He died of natural causes. Which means that he died because of things like, heart attack and old age. They built a statue when he died.
