Changing of the Twelves
The changing of the twelves is when all of the previous twelves are given his/her assignment. Jonas was skipped, and thought that something was wrong. Later, he found out he was selected to be the next Receiver of Memories, a very important job. -
The Rules
When Jonas was selected, he went home and read the rules. They were all knew to him, but one stuck out...He was allowed to lie. This was different to him because he was taught not to lie. -
Seeing Beyond
Before Jonas started his job as the receiver, he was already beginning to see beyond. This means he was seeing color. His first color was red. He saw this first when he and Asher were tossing an apple back and forth until the apple changed for a brief moment. Later, Jonas was told that this was called "seeing beyond." -
Receiving Memories
In the beginning of his job as the Receiver of Memory, he was given happy memories. His first memory was him riding a sled down a snowy hill. This was Jonas' first time experiencing snow. Later, Jonas asked the Giver for painful memories. At first, he was given the memory of sunshine. After that, he was given the memory of sunburn. This was the first of many and much more painful memories. -
Memories
One day, Jonas received the memory of war. Changed by the memory, he went to play with friends. When he found his friends, they were playing imaginary war. Jonas did not like this and told his friends this. -
More Memories
Jonas started to receive more and painful memories. Also, he started to be given the memory of things that were removed from his community. Such as elephants, people of different colors, and war.
