    Arriving in Virginia
    The three ships called the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery left England in December of 1606 because King James I wanted The Virginia Company of London to make a profit for him, find the Northwest Passage, and converting the Indians. Four months later, in April, the colonists arrived in Virginia.
  • Starting a Colony

    Starting a Colony
    Jamestown started in Virginia in 1607 and it was the first English Colony. It was started before the Pilgrims arrived. This colony was important because some of the colonists' ideas about economics and government started here.
  • Captain John Smith

    Captain John Smith
    In 1608, Captain John Smith became the leader of the colony and started a no work, no food policy because some of the upper clas Englishmen did not want to work. He also helped establish good trade policies between the colony and the Powhatan Indians with the help of Pocahontas. Later, he left and things started to get worse for the colonists.

    1609-1610
    A lot of settlers died because of starvation and being attacked by the Powhatan Indians. The colonists wanted to leave Jamestown, but stayed when Lord De La Ware came with supplies. He became governor and helped the colony continue.
  • Tobacco

    Tobacco
    Tobacco is a very important crop that makes a lot of money. John Rolfe, in 1613, helped make the colony successful through the tobacco crops. This helped the colony to grow fast and large, but this also made the people of Jamestown begin keeping slaves. Also, John Rolfe married Pocahontas and that helped to keep some peace between the colonists and the Indians.

    Sadly in 1619, the first African slaves arrived in Virginia and this started the slavery in the South. This led to the horrible treatment of Africans in the South during this time and up until the Civil War.

    The Beginning of the End for Jamestown
    In 1624, Jamestown became a royal colony by the King because of war with the Powhatan Indians and because of wrong doing by the Virginia Company. Jamestown stayed the capital of the Virginia Colony until 1699 and was replaced by Wiliamsburg.
