Suspected nobles of killing his wife to take him off of his throne. Ivan then setup a private police force called the oprinichniki to kill the nobles and their families. -

Ivan killed his son in a violent dispute
Ivan killed the chosen heir. This caused Ivan's other son to rule. -
Death
Ivan died badly tempered and unpredictable. Most of the families of Nobles were effected by Ivan's actions. Many usable land was abandoned due to the fear people had of the oprichniki.
