Some time after Sojourner gained her freedom in 1827, she became a well known anti-slavery speaker and women right activist.

An international day for women
In 1910, Clara Zetkin from Germany proposed that Women's Day started to be internationally celebrated. Originally known as International Working Women's Day, its roots lie in the socialist, rather than feminist, struggle of the early 20th century. Zetkin was a German Marxist theorist, activist, and advocate for women's rights. -

The new millennium brought a change in attitude towards women's equality and emancipation, but there is still a long way to go. Women are still victims of violence for their gender and earn less than men, but we do have female astronauts and prime ministers. Schoolgirls are welcomed into university and although it is hard women can work and have a family. Some countries made International Women's Day a holiday.
