  • The First Great Awakening

    The First Great Awakening
    The first Great Awakening took place during the 1730's through 1740's. This was a time period where a series of religious revivals were held through out the colonies.The Awakening was lead by protestant ministers John Edwards, George Whitfield, and Gilbert Tennent. The Awakening challenged religious authority and helped bring christianity to the African American slaves
  • John Edwards- "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"

    John Edwards- "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"
    John Edwards was one of the leaders of the Great Awakening. Many people consider his sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" to be the beginning of major religious changes for people of the colonies. This sermon left colonists in tears and scared. Never before had someone spoke so bluntly to the colonists.
  • 1763- Treaty of Paris

    1763- Treaty of Paris
    1763 the Treaty of Paris was signed giving the British Empire control of New France. Great Britain then had control over of all the land from Canada to Florida and east of the Mississippi.

    The Declaration of Independence
    In 1776 the colonists signed the Declaration of Independence. This marked the time when America was now there own. Religion was the backbone of all the original 13 colonies that began our now United States of America.
  • The Bill of Rights

    The Bill of Rights
    In 1789, the first Congress of the U.S. made amendments to the constitution. These were to become known as the Bill of Rights. The first amendment to the constitution says that Congress can make no laws against religion, people are free to choose. The colonists did not want state religion like England enforced. They wanted everyone to get to choose for themselves.

    The Second Great Awakening
    The Second Great Awakening was an important point in religious life in the Americas. The Awakening included roles for white women. By the second Great Awakening many more African Americans were reached and were practicing Christianity.
