  • Treaty of Nanjing

    Treaty of Nanjing
    This treaty was signed between the British government and the Qing Dynasty in order to end the Opium wars. On August 29, 1842, the two governments met aboard the HMS Cornwallis to sign the treaty together.
  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    Treaty of Kanagawa
    This treaty was signed on March 31, 1854 in Tokyo between the United States and Japan. The purpose of the treaty was to open two Japanese ports to American trade and permit the United States to set up a consulate.
  • British Raj

    British Raj
    The British Raj was founded in 1858, ruled under Empress Victoria of England. This happened because rule of the East India Company was transferred to the British government.
  • Suez Canal Built

    Suez Canal Built
    The Suez Canal Company formed in 1854 and began work on the canal, finishing in 1869. By November 17, 1869, the canal was open for shipping, and although it was initially small and shallow, it soon expanded and became a very popular shipping route.

    In late 1871, David Livingstone was thought to be lost, leading Henry Stanley on a voyage to Africa to find him. When he finally found him, he said the famous quote "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?".

    By October 1899, a full scale war had erupted between the Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers in Africa, and the British. On May 31st of 1902 a peace treaty was signed, ending the war.

    The Panama Canal was built between 1904 and 1914 by the United States under President Theodore Roosevelt. Construction was long, difficult, and dangerous, plagued by weather and disease which stopped the French before them.
