    Treaty of Nanjing
    The Treaty of Nanjing was a peace treaty that ended the First Opium War between the Britain and the Qing dynasty. China paid the British an "insurance", gave them the territory of Hong Kong, and agreed to establish a tariff.
  • Sepoy Rebellion

    Sepoy Rebellion
    Sepoys, Indian soldiers, in the British East India Company's army fought against the British. The new Pattern 1853 Enfield rifle used greased paper cartridges, and in order to open the cartridges sepoys had to bite into the paper which was rumored to be a mixture of beef tallow and pork lard.

    The Suez Canal is a canal connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. Ferdinand de Lesseps got permission from the Egyptian government to make a company to create a canal open to ships of any nation.

    It was delivered to Congress by President James Monroe. The doctrine warned European countries that the United States would no longer tolerate anymore colonization or puppet monarchs in the Americas.

    It was a fight between Great Britain and two Boer states in South Africa: the South African Republic and the Orange Free State. The last of the Boers eventually surrendered in May of 1902 and signed the Treaty of Vereeniging

    Boxer Rebellion
    It was an anti-imperialist uprising against America and some European countries. An international army eventually subdued the uprising in Beijing.
  • Panama Canal

    Panama Canal
    President Theodore Roosevelt oversaw the creation of the canal after de Lesseps was forced to stop construction. It is an artificial waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean through the Isthmus of Panama
