    Japanese ship full of Indians passengers named the Komogata Maru, arrived in Vancouer but were forced to return, due to the Canadian policy which only allows Indians to enter Canada if they sailed directly from India.
  • Internment of Ukrainian Canadians

    Internment of Ukrainian Canadians
    In WWII, more than 8,000 Ukrainian and German descent were arrested and sent to internment camps. At the time, Canada was at war with Germany and Austria-Hungary and saw Ukrainian people as a threat. The Ukrainians were seized of their property and possessions. They had to work as laborers because there were no paying jobs in the camps.

    When Italy declared war on Canada, the War Measure Act, allowed the arrest of Italian descent. 700 people were affected. Those arrested, got their property seized and were sent to camps.

    One year after the attack on Pearl Habour, Canada moved all people of Japanese origin away from the west coast of Canada. Under the War Measures Act, 20 000 Japanese descent were forced to leave their communities and be sent inland to remote communities.

The Immigration and Refugee Board was established and rights were created to those claiming refugee status.
