  • Colonies come to America

    New England- Puritans
    Middle Colonies- "bread basket"
    Chesapeake- tobacco, farming
  • Indentured servants

    promised to work for masters for certain amount of time to get to America. up until bacons rebellion (1600s)
  • Slaves came to US

    b/c of Atlantic Slave trade and bacons rebellion
  • Proclamation Line

    tried to limit colonist's movement out west (to limit conflicts between natives) , angered them, led to rev.
  • temperance movement

    many irish and germans drank, so temperance movement was part of a larger nativist movement
  • Native Americans were pushed west

    Trail of Tears, Indian Removal Act
  • gold rush

    many immigrants came to America in search of gold, most unsuccessful.
  • Know Nothing Party

    Against immigrants, especially Irish (NINA) and German
  • Homestead Act & Railroads

    helped to get people to move out west (manifest destiny)
  • Knights of Labor

    Skilled AND unskilled workers, made up of lots of immigrants. lost popularity after Haymarket Square bombing
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    excluded all chinese bc ppl feared it took away jobs from "native" Americans
  • Settlement Houses

    helped "new immigrants" and laborers navigate their lives (Hull House)
  • KKK

    partly a nativist group, against catholicism and communism
  • Gentleman's Agreement

    Japanese could come to America (but would limit it) if US wouldn't put any restrictions
  • Great Migration

    thousands of African-Americans fled to the north bc of economic opportunities, fear of lynching, and jim crow laws
  • 1st Red Scare

    after WWI, fear of communism
  • Immigration Quotas in 1920s

    '21 and '24, greatly reduced immigration, especially for Asians
  • Sacco & Vanzetti Trials

    2 immigrants were executed (largely bc of their nationality)
  • 2nd Red Scare

    after WWII, fear of communism
  • White Flight

    fled to suburbs bc of IHA, great migration
