July 28 1954: This is when Hugo Chavez was born. He was born in Sabaneta Venezuela. His father was Hugo De los Reyes Chavez, and his mother was Elena Frias de Chavez. -
Coup Fail
February 4 1992: This was the first attempt of Hugo Chavez and other people to take control of the Venezuelan government. This first attempt failed. When they found out that Hugo was leading this attempt they put him in jail for a 2 year span. -
Running for president
1998: Hugo ran for presidency of Venezuela in this year. He campaigned that he would not use his power for bad things if he became president. He also said that he would fix the economy. -
President
February 1999: This was the year Hugo became president of Venezuela. During this time he wanted to change the Venezuelan constitution. As part of this change the country was renamed to Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. -
Kicked out
April 2002: Hugo was facing challenges at home and in his presidency. He was removed from presidency for trying to take too much control over a oil company and the military kicked him out. -
Rejoined
August 2004: The referendum vote was held. The people decided that he should complete his time as president. This was the majority of people who decided to do this. -
ALBA
2006: Hugo made up a Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas. This was a free trade organization. Joined by Fidel Castro, president of Cuba, and Evo Morales, president of Bolivia. -
Period: to
Cancer
2011-2012: In 2011 he found out that he had cancer. From 2011 to 2012 he went through three surgeries to remove cancer. He also had cancerous tumors. -
No longer hold office
February 2012: He said that he would no longer be able to hold his office. So he named Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro for his replacement. He was also told he could not serve his 4th term. -
Death
March 5 2013: Hugo died on March 5 because of cancer. He died at age 58 after fighting years of cancer. He died in Caracas Venezuela.
