    President Eisenhower requested that the Defense Department create a special unit specifically to examine the improvement of our military communication. This unit was called "Advanced Research Projects Agency", or arpa for short. This agency is what sparked the ingenuity and scientific genius that became the world wide web.

  • The Arpanet was Born

    The Arpanet was Born
    During the early stages of internet conception, there were several different terminals that serviced specific geographical areas. It was a large inconvenience, and therefore had to be improved upon. Robert Taylor, the third director of arpa's computer science division, came up with the idea to centralize all of these terminals into one. That way, you could connect multiple outlets to one terminal.

    At UCLA, the first I.M.P. connected to the first host. While the world did not take notice of this event, this was the birth of the internet. It was so insignificant at the time, it took a month for Stanford Research Institute to notice that they even received the switch.

    In 1978, before e-mail was even popular, junk email became a problem. It was the first major form of spam to hit Arpanet, and is still an issue today. In 2008, $140 billion was spent combating span e-mails. E-mail went on to become the most popular app on the internet.

    Chatrooms and IMs
    Message boards and chatrooms were launched during this year. Instant Messaging, or IMs, made their debut, as well. They were conceptualized with the motto "community trumps content", meaning that commerce, entertainment, and financial services were pushed to the background, and conversation to the forefront. It became a convenient way for communication to occur in abundance.
  • The First Virus was Released

    The First Virus was Released
    Robert Morris, a Cornell graduate student, created the first worm, which we now call the "Morris Worm". Innocently enough, he discovered that he could wander the internet via a few security holes in the Unix systems, but ended up accidently shutting the entire network down. He was the first individual to be indicted under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. He was assigned the following penalties: $10,000 dollar fine, three year's worth of probation, and 400 hours of community service.
  • The World Wide Web Went Public

    The World Wide Web Went Public
    In cern, a physics laboratory based in Geneva, the World Wide Web was formally introduced to the world. The credit was given to British scientist Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau, his Belgain assistant. Due to its abundance of global-information resources, browsers, or software that can navigate the internet, were introduced. Mosaic, created by Marc Andreessen, was the first successful browser.

    The Dawn of Online Shopping - eBay
    Between 1994 and 1995, the technology was created to make Web pages interactice. During 1995, Pierre Omidyar created eBay, an online bidding site. It was conceptualized with the idea of being a "single market" where people can come together and trade goods at fair value.
  • Friendster to MySpace

    Friendster to MySpace
    Former Netscape engineer Jonathan Abrams created the first social networking site called "Friendster". It was specifically created to be used by friends in real life. Up until this point, internet site use was usually shrouded in mystery - sites like match.com would cause embarassment to the user if their profile was ever discovered, as online dating didn't have the approval in the early 2000's that it does now. Eventually, Friendster became MySpace.
  • YouTube Enters the Web

    YouTube Enters the Web
    YouTube, the first major video site, was also the first website to allow its website to be purely driven by user-generated content. In 2007, YouTube alone consumed as much bandwith as the entire internet did in 2000. Chad Hurley created YouTube withthe help of engineer Steve Chen. The two went on to create PayPal, as well.
