    Andrew Johnson became president
    Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), the 17th U.S. president, assumed office after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865). Johnson, who served from 1865 to 1869, was the first American president to be impeached. A tailor before he entered politics, Johnson grew up poor and lacked a formal education. He served in the Tennessee legislature and the U.S. Congress, and was governor of Tennessee. A Democrat, he championed populist measures and supported states’ rights. The 14th presesdent was killed

Hundreds of thousands of families began moving onto the great plains to farm and build a house is. The Homestead Act was passed. The land cost $10.00 to settle in to land. The women made cloths and cooked for the man and kids and the kids and mother did the chores. To keep the land the family could have to build a house, farm the land, and live there for over five years.
