  • Treaty of Versailles

    Germans had to pay back countries. Reduce in city. Lose military. Can only have a certain amount of soldiers. Lose land. Treaty of Versailles was the most important in the peace treaty, that brought WW1 down.
  • Hyper inflation

    Prices rise so fast it gets out-of-control. Price of bread in Germany.
  • Beer hall Putsch

    Hitler attempts to overthrow the German government.
    - About two thousand men marched to the centre of Munich, where they confronted the police, which resulted in the death of 16 Nazis and four policemen. Hitler himself was wounded.
    -After two days, Hitler was arrested and charged with treason

    -His arrest was followed by a 24-day trial, which was widely publicized and gave Hitler a platform to publicize his nationalist sentiment to the nation. Hitler was found guilty of treason and sentenced to five years in Landsberg Prison.
    -On 20 December 1924, having served only nine months, Hitler was released.

  • Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany

    Eliminate political rivals to e head of Nazis. Rising popularity of Nazis forces Hindenburg to give him some power. Hindenburg came up with a plan to get the Nazis on their side by offering to make Hitler vice chancellor. He refused and demanded to be made Chancellor.

    Holocaust

    The Holocaust was a horrible disaster that happened in Germany, that lasted from 1933 till 1945. The main person that lead the Holocaust was Adolf Hitler. His group of Nazis killed about 11 million people, throughout the 12 years that the Holocaust was in play.
  • Reichstag Fire of February 1933

    Hitler blames Communists for fire. Hitler didn't have any evidence on if the Communists really did it. Everyone later believed that the Communists set the fire and are bad people for doing it. The Communists really didn't do it. Hitler hired employees to torch the Reichstag.
  • Official Boycott of Jewish Businesses

    On April 1, 1933, the Nazis carried out the first nationwide, planned action against them: a boycott of Jewish businesses. Nazi spokesmen claimed the boycott was an act of revenge against both German Jews and foreigners, including US and English journalists, who had criticized the Nazi regime.
  • Enabling Act of March 1933

    Gives power of decision making to Hitler. Within a few months, all other political parties besides the Nazis were eliminated. The allowed Hitler to get rid of all his rivals.
  • Nuremberg Laws- 1935

    Nazis needed a way to identify Jews so they could discriminate them. Nuremberg Laws defined people with 3 or 4 Jewish Grandparents as "Jewish" and 1 or 2 as "Mixed Blood." (Allowing them to figure out who was a Jew)

    -Forbade Jews from marrying non-Jews
    -Cannot fly national flag
    -Punishments included fines, imprisonment and hard labor
    (Eventually many more discrimination laws would be put in place building on this one)
  • Kristallnacht

    On Nov. 9th to Nov. 10th, Nazis blew up a bunch of Jewish homes, business, and schools in Germany. The destruction left nothing left, and killed about 100 Jews.

    Anne Franks family goes into hiding
    Anne Frank went into hiding with her family. She went into hiding because the Nazis were coming to kill or send the Jews to horrible places. Anne Frank and her family went into hiding in the attic of her dads old business.
  • Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

    -Residents smuggled weapons in.
    -Uprising lasted for about a month.
    -SS troops arrested and deported residents after the uprising ended.

    Camp Rebellions

    Prisoners fought back at the death camps...

    -After stealing weapons from guards, prisoners tried to escape. Most were killed but a few dozen made it out and survived the war
    Auschwitz- Birkenau (1944)
    -Members of the Sonderkommando working in the Crematorium fought SS guards killing over 70, but all 250 as well as 200 others were killed in response.

    Death Marches

    -Allies advancing toward death camps.
    -Nazis evacuate prisoners, arch them into Germany to avoid capture.
    -Brutal treatment and harsh conditions along the way.
  • Liberation of Concentration camps

    Soviet soldiers were the first to liberate concentration camp prisoners in the final stages of the war. On July 23, 1944, they entered the Majdanek camp in Poland, and later overran several other killing centers. On January 27, 1945, they entered Auschwitz and there found hundreds of sick and exhausted prisoners.

    Camps throughout Europe are liberated by Allied forces.

  • The war ends

    Hitler commits suicide rather than face capture by the Soviet Red Army.
    Germany surrenders within a week.
  • Mr. Frank returns to the annex and finds Anne's diary.

    Anne's diary was so important to many people because it described her life while the Holocaust was going on and before it started.
  • What now? Nuremberg Trials

    The allies and the International Community put a number of Germans on trail for War Crimes, crimes against peace and crimes against humanity.

    Displaced persons camps- Areas for former prisoners to stay while searching for family and a permanent place to live.
  • Nazis begin rounding up millions of Jew and confining them to Ghettos

    -Largest Ghettos were in cities like Warsaw or Lodz in Poland.
  • Zyklon B

    Zyklon B gas is first tested at the Auschwitz- Birkenau camp as a use for mass extermination
    - This would become the Nazis' "preferred method" for the Austerity Birkenau and Majdanek camps.
