history Timeline of the Civil RIghts Movement

  • Plessy V. Ferguson

Plessy V. Ferguson is a Supreme Court case that was a big part of the start of The Civil RIghts Movement. Plessy V. Ferguson is based around the "Separate car act." in 1896 there was a law passed there whites and blacks had separate train cars. One guy, Homer Plessy, refused to sit inside of the Jim Crow car, the car designated for blacks because his "Constitutional rights were violated." the court decided to rule against Plessy because of the Separate but equal law.
  • Busses Segregated in Montgomery

In 1950 Montgomery, Alabama made it illegal for blacks to sit on the front of busses. The front seats of the bus were reserved for whites only. This made groups of blacks use other forms of transportation instead of public transportation like carpooling, walking, and getting rides from white housewives.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

Brown V. Board of Education was, in my opinion, the most important part of the Civil Rights movement. During the beginning of the civil rights movement public schools were segregated. Brown's daughter had to travel to school because they wouldn't let her go to the all white school. Brown took this to the Supreme Court and won the case. This made every public school in america have to be desegregated and equal.
  • Murder of Emmett Till

The Murder of Emmett Till was a very controversial case. A black teen named Emmett Till that was visiting family in Mississippi was killed by white males because a girl that they knew said she was offended by him. This was very controversial case because the two males that killed him didn't get charged for anything and didn't go to jail and Emmett Till's mother had an open casket funeral to show what racism looked like
  • Rosa Park's Arrest

Rosa Park was a Civil RIghts activist that was inspired by Emmett TIll to make a change. During the Civil Rights movement it was illegal for blacks to sit on the front of the bus. Rosa Parks got on the bus and refused to give up her seat until she was arrested. This started the Bus Boycott where blacks got together to not use the busses because they made up a majority of the community which led to a problem for the city. and Sit-Ins where blacks would sit in restaurants that served whites only.
  • Montgomery Improvement Council

The Montgomery Improvement Council was formed by blacks to help improve the Bus Boycotts. The council appointed Martin Luther King to be the President. The council's main goal was to not only improve the overall quality of the Bus Boycott, but to help other blacks fine a mode of transportation, They set up meetings to give people rides and set up carpools and other ways to get people to their destinations.
  • Browder v. Gayle

The case of Browder v. Gayle goes hand in hand with Rosa Parks being arrested. It was when groups of Civil RIghts leaders got together and tried to remove bus segregation laws. Eventually the bus segregation laws got overturned . The case got upheld because it violated the 13 and 14th amendment.
